Director of Public Works

Caroline County, Maryland, seeks a strong, focused manager to lead the County’s Public Works Department. The Director of Public Works manages all day-to-day operations of the department including road and bridge maintenance, fleet operations and building maintenance, field inspections, regulatory compliance and other areas of public infrastructure.

The successful candidate will be a team-oriented manager with the proven ability to maintain a safe and productive working environment. The capacity to build positive working relationships is important as the County and the Department work through a period of very limited resources. Strong leadership skills are essential as is the ability to plan, organize and manage a diverse range of projects.

Public Works is a challenging but often unrecognized field of public service. The ideal applicant will have the energy, drive and dedication to build the best county Public Works Department in the region.

A Bachelor’s Degree in Engineering, Public or Business Administration or related field is strongly preferred with 6 years of management experience or an equivalent education and experience with 10 years management experience with at least 6 years in a public works, construction, engineering setting.

The starting salary range is $71,005 - $98,874; and the County provides excellent benefits. Upon an employment offer, the applicant must submit to a substance abuse test and complete background check.

Caroline County is located on the beautiful Eastern Shore of Maryland and is known as the “Green Garden County.” The County’s 32,000 residents are especially proud of their rich rural heritage and enjoy access to over 5,000 acres of parkland and wildlife preserves and miles of scenic rivers and streams. The Town of Denton is the County seat and is home to lovely historical buildings and is experiencing exciting downtown revitalizations and economic development. All of Caroline County’s towns are places where neighbors welcome newcomers to settle in and join the fabric of small town life.

Caroline County is centrally and conveniently located – the beautiful and relaxing Atlantic beaches of Maryland and Delaware are less than an hour away and the bustle and culture of Washington, D.C. and Baltimore can be reached in only an hour and a half. Further, the attractions of many of the Chesapeake Bay’s most charming and historic towns are just next door.
