Our Mission

Staff and Volunteers
Our Mission is to improve and enrich citizen well-being and community life through the provision of affordable, high-quality activities, parks, and facilities for Caroline County families and individuals.

The Department does this by actively involving citizens in the provision of services, partnering with other local government agencies to develop park facilities and specific recreation programs and by safely maintaining the park facilities under its direction. A 12-member Citizen's Advisory Board appointed by the Caroline County Commissioners also guides it.

Department Divisions

ADMINISTRATIVE SERVICES
The staff is responsible for planning, management, registration and public information production for all services under its jurisdiction.

PARKS DIVISION
This division of service includes the management and operations of three playground/community parks: Jonestown, Henderson and Dayspring near Ridgely; four school community parks at Lockerman Middle School and Ridgely, Denton and Preston Elementary Schools; two historical markers: Colonel Richardson and Dickerson tombs, the Caroline County Courthouse grounds, Cedar Lane Park (Greensboro) and Harmony Community Park.

In addition the Department manages these facilities:

Denton Armory Community Center - the building is owned by the State of Maryland and has been leased by the Caroline County Commissioners for the last 20 years. It's current function as community centers reflects attendance levels of over 5,300 annually. The Recreation Division offers revenue - generating programs for youth and adults; a portion of the fees charged will be transferred directly to the Armory revenue accounts to defray operating costs. In addition, the facility is rented to private individuals and community groups for birthday parties, church events, sports practices, social events and fitness classes. The Department manages this service by employing trained part-time facility supervisors during community rentals.

Choptank Marina - a 70 slip public marina and boat ramp located south of Preston on the Choptank River. It is operated on revenues generated from annual slip rentals and gas sales. Improvements include dredged marina basin, new roadside bulkhead, widened selected slips and electric service upgrade.

Boat Ramps And Public Landings - Ganey's Wharf, Hillsboro and Greensboro Boat Ramps, Stoney Point Public Landing and Christian Park. Approximately 3.5 acres is mowed and trimmed. Portable toilets are also provided at the developed ramp sites.

RECREATION DIVISION
star-spangled
Youth services represent the largest portion of the total recreation division budget and a majority of the public programs developed and managed by the Department. Services in this category are either self-supporting with revenues generated from fees, grants and private sponsorships, or they are partially subsidized with general tax funds.

Adult and senior services comprises the smallest service category in the division. All services are self-supporting and focus primarily on adult educational classes and karate instruction.

Special Event and Family Services reflects a variety of large and small special event and special service programs both managed and facilitated by this division. The division includes events like Caroline Summerfest, Two Mile Turkey Trot Fun Run, Youth Fishing Derby, and Christmas Holiday programming. All of these services are self-supporting through fees, private sponsorships and a liberal use of volunteers.

The Caroline County Department of Recreation & Parks welcomes the participation of all individuals, including those with disabilities, into our programs. We fully comply with the Americans with Disabilities Act in making reasonable accommodations to encourage participation.
